So I'd like to write up an entry for salamanders, based on the mythical kind that lives in fire. Except the version I'm thinking of doesn't actually live in fire, just produces heat and light. I have possible ways this could happen: by chemical reaction, or by magic. Can you tell me which would fit the world better?
Chemical version: Salamanders natural produce two chemicals within their bodies that, when mixed, produce heat and light. When they are cold, they mix a controlled amount within them, producing just enough heat to warm them and a small amount of bioluminescence. (The light can also be used to attract mates, communicate with others of their species, attract bugs to eat, etc.) If the chemicals are mixed in an uncontrolled manner, usually when a predator attacks the salamander and ruptures the glands that store the chemicals, then they produce quite a bit of heat, enough to burn the predator. This deters that predator from attacking that species again, much like poisonous frogs.
Magical version: Salamanders can store heat within themselves for later use. Like any cold-blooded creature they bask in sunlight (or another source of heat) to keep warm. But unlike mundane animals, salamanders can store excess heat for later use. They can then release it later when they need to be warm, or convert it to light for anything one would use bioluminescence for. They can also use this heat as a defense; if they feel threatened, they can release a large amount of heat at once in a burst that can burn an attacker, or a lot of light at once to temporarily blind an attacker long enough to get away.
Either version could be domesticated by gryphs, where they're bred to produce a heat that's pleasing to gryphs and can be used like living hot packs to relax sore muscles or warm chilled extremities. Or to produce light like living lamps (or living bug zappers!).

OK! That's my favorite of the two as well, but I wanted to make sure it would work.

That's looking great mewrose! This contest has been a wonderful thing for the world with people adding to it things I wouldn't have thought of, and it's really enriched the world.

On the last day of this contest, I'm really happy to see what all has showed up, and judging is going to be a real challenge. There may be some delay so Storms and I can converse since she's sick.

oh good, yes I enjoyed what I did write and would like to add more to it if I think of anything/ invent new things. Especially if we can start getting collaborative on it and bouncing ideas of eachother.

I loved all of these ideas so much and after deliberation, Atraties and I couldn't even agree which to narrow it down to. So, I did a random draw of the entries, Maetria was the winner. The shipping is $4, I have a few "rejects" ton shoose from, I'll have a photo up soon =)all are common tundra lupines: one is green with sable, one is a turquoise derp with orange eyes, and the last is a small dominant black fellow.
